The Day After Christmas

One of the best memories I have of the holiday season is the day after Christmas. Waking up to a quiet house, family still asleep contented after spending time together opening gifts and watching “It’s a Wonderful Life”. It is early in the morning, tree still up with opened gifts under the tree, wrapping paper spilling out of paper bags waiting to be taken out. It is a day of rest where the soul is reminded of the gift of peace given to humanity that stems from family, love, and the Divine.

Christmas means many things to many people, but considering the message of the season is peace on earth, it is a time we hope this peace manifests in our hearts, families, and the world. That is what the Christian religion speaks about with the coming of Jesus Christ; amidst war, hate, and fear God brings to us the hope of peace in the Christ child.

The day after Christmas is a day where we consider the days ahead, anticipatory to New Years Eve. We consider the year to come, hope for our family and your prosperity, and wonder with some trepidation what the new year may bring. Jesus Christ reminds us that despite wars waged and rumors abound, peace can be attained within. Accepting the Divine within our hearts amidst the war within is the key; just as Christ came to an occupied land full of violence. Somehow Jesus survived his early life born in a manger and later as his family fled to Egypt. Somehow peace can reign in our hearts as well. Somehow we will survive.

Consider taking the leap of faith that all will be well. The world has never been at peace, controversy has always reigned, be it war, racism, sexism, poverty, or cruelty. In the midst of such brokenness, we are called to peace first in our hearts. Know that you are cared for by the Almighty; dare yourself to believe you are in his hands. Even if it doesn’t seem logical or real, it will in time. Take some time to take deep breaths, allowing God to replace your fear with every breath.
